Local MP, Ed Davey, has welcomed news that the government have finally accepted Liberal Democrat proposals to clamp down on cold calling.
The changes will see tough new regulations on claims management companies who undertake cold calling.
Speaking in the Lords last night, Ministers declared that the government will accept Liberal Democrat proposals into the Financial Guidance and Claims Bill.
This is a victory for Liberal Democrat peers John Sharkey and Susan Kramer, who have been leading the charge against cold calling and follows a similar victory last week.
Commenting Ed Davey said:
“My constituents are sick and tired of being harassed day in, day out by cold calling so I am glad that the Government has listened and is finally tackling this scourge on our society.
“Over the years, it has been deeply distressing to see many vulnerable and innocent people taken advantage by cold callers and signing up for things they don’t want, don’t need and can’t afford. The steps the Government is now taking will particularly protect these people which I warmly welcome.
“Once the new regulations are in place, I will continue to press the Government to ensure that claims management companies abide by the new rules and put a stop to their cold calling.”
